What Is A Memory Foam Pillow?
Memory foam pillows, are made out of a special type of synthetic foam that reacts to heat and pressure and conforms to the shape of a users, head or neck. Viscoelastic foam is the most common type of memory foam on the market, it is also commonly referred to as polyurethane foam, or low-resilience polyurethane foam. It originally was developed by NASA for use in the space program, but was never actually used in commercial space flight (in fact a lot of people assume since NASA developed it, that it was used in space shuttle missions, this is incorrect). The remarkable quality of memory foam is, that once pressure or heat is removed from the foam it returns to it’s natural shape. So unlike other types of pillows that can go flat over time, memory foam will always return to it’s original shape.
What Are The Main Shapes Of Memory Foam Pillows?
Similar to latex pillows, memory foam pillows come in several different shapes, since the material can be molded and shaped for different purposes. There are three main shapes of memory foam pillows that we will be discussing, there are of course other types of specialty memory foam pillows, for side sleepers and different purposes, however these are the main three.
Traditional or standard pillows are by far the most common types of memory foam pillow. They are rectangular in shape and look similar to most pillows that you are aware of. They are made up of one continuous piece of memory foam that is shaped and pressed into a standard rectangular shape and are ideal for back and side sleepers. Many of the traditional pillows will also have some type of gel infused into the memory foam, to help reduce heat buildup and to provide a cooling sensation as you sleep on the pillow.
A contour memory foam pillow is typically two pieces of solid memory foam bonded together, there will be a harder more dense foam in the center of the pillow and another layer of softer viscoelastic memory foam to form the top layer of the pillow. The unique aspect of the contour pillow, is it’s valley in the center that is designed to support and cradle your head and ridges that provide optimal support for your neck and shoulders. If you have neck or shoulder problems, a contour pillow maybe just what you need to get a restful nights sleep.
Shredded memory foam pillows are very similar to traditional pillows, except they have small pieces of memory foam that is cut up and packed into the shell of the pillow. The benefit of shredded foam pillows, are that they allow you to have a more loftier pillow, without having to fluff them the same way you would have to do with a down pillow. While shredded memory foam pillows are not too common, they are still available and something you should be aware of, if you want a really tall and comfortable pillow.
Pros And Cons Of Memory Foam Pillows
Before purchasing any new pillow, you want to be at least familiar to some of the pros and cons of it, to make sure that it fits your needs. While memory foam pillows are quite popular and perfect for individuals who want the feeling of really sinking into their pillow and still having that support, for some sleepers, there are other pillow options out there that could be slightly better. For example, for stomach sleepers, you really would want to go with a traditional pillow or latex pillow, that is super firm and doesn’t as easily conform to your head-shape.
1. Hypoallergenic- Due to how the pillows are produced, they are naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mildew and dust mites, so if you suffer from allergies, memory foam pillows are ideal.
2. Great Support- Viscoelastic foam is actually quite supportive, while also cushioning the individual. Unlike down or feather pillows that can go flat, viscoelastic pillows retain most of their shape and height, even when you are sleeping on them.
3. Washable- Memory foam pillows can easily be wiped down and washed in a tub with mild soap and hot water and the shell or cotton cover can be machine washed. Even shredded pillows can be washed, by removing the material from the pillow and putting the cover or shell in the washing machine to be cleaned.
4. Choices Of Firmness- Most individuals do not associate memory foam pillows with being firm, because you do sink into the pillow. However, that is not entirely true, since memory foam can come in various densities, a number of manufactures have different firmness of pillows for you to choose from.
1. Heat Retention- One of the major drawbacks to memory foam pillows is the fact that they can retain heat. That said, these days with gel infused memory foam and breathable holes in the memory foam pillows, that is really a thing of the past and manufactures have done an excellent job of reducing or eliminating heat retention. In fact many of the gel infused memory foam pillows, actually dissipate heat so well that they provide a cooling sensation throughout the night, which can be quite nice.
2. Odor- Similar to that “new car smell” that you may notice if you purchase a new car, memory foam pillows can have a slight odor to them, due to off-gassing when you first purchase them. The odors go away after a few days and for most people you will barely even notice any odor at all. However, for some individuals the odor and offgassing be less than pleasant, so if you put your pillow in another room, you will find that in 2-3 days you will be able to put it on your bed, without smelling anything. That said, many of the memory foam pillows are made from natural organic plant based material, so there is no offgassing or odors.
3. Heavier Than Some Pillows- While not a huge problem to most, memory foam pillows are a bit heavier than your traditional feather or down pillow. They are not as heavy as say a rubber type pillow like the Purple pillow, but they can weigh anywhere from 2-5 pounds, so you should be at least aware of that fact.
