When it comes to making sure that you will get a comfortable nights sleep, one factor that often times gets overlooked, is whether you have enough room to sleep comfortably and relax. When it comes to purchasing a new mattress, all too often people are dissatisfied because they were never happy with the size of their original mattress to begin with and they felt that replacing their mattress would give them a more comfortable nights sleep. While it maybe more costly to get a new mattress frame and or bed, if your original mattress was too small for you to comfortably sleep at night, it maybe the wisest option.
When it comes to choosing the right mattress and bed frame for your needs, you should consider how many people will be sleeping in the bed at night. If it is just one person, a twin, twin XL or full sized mattress should be fine. However, if two people will be sleeping in the bed at night or you want extra room to spread out, then you will want to go with a queen, king or California king sized bed to make sure you both have enough room to sleep comfortably.
You also should be aware of what size your mattress frame or bed will support, if you are not replacing those as well. And also get some rough dimensions of the room, before purchasing a new mattress. While a king sized mattress that is both large and luxurious and offers a lot of room to spread out, maybe ideal, if it is taking up every inch of your bedroom, it might not be the best fit.
Twin Bed Dimensions (Width: 39 in x Length: 74 in)
Twin sized mattresses are the smallest standard mattress that is available, it is 39 inches wide by 74 inches long and is best for one kid or adult. Taller adults may opt for a Twin XL which is 80 inches long, so really any adult or child who is 5’11” or taller will feel a lot more comfortable with a Twin XL mattress, since it is just a bit longer. Keep in mind that 74 inches is just a tad bit longer than 6 feet.
Twin XL Bed Dimensions (Width: 39 in x Length: 80 in)
Twin XL mattress are great for slightly taller adults, measuring 6 inches longer than a standard sized twin mattress. You will want to of course make sure your bed or mattress frame can support a Twin XL mattress, before purchasing one.
Full Bed Dimensions (Width: 54 in x Length: 74 in)
A full sized or double mattress is roughly 16 inches wider than a twin mattress and provides a bit more room to spread out. It’s not quite large enough for two adults though, so be aware of that. Many parents actually purchase full sized beds for their children, since they are a bit larger and do allow two people to lie down in them at once, so parents can read stories to their children at bed time.
Queen Bed Dimensions (Width: 60 in x Length: 80 in)
Queen sized mattresses are one of the most widely sold mattresses, they allow for two people to sleep comfortably at night, yet are not quite as large as a king sized bed. They are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, so you both can sleep comfortably and stretch out. And compared to a king sized mattress, they do take up quite a bit less room, so you don’t have to worry about your bed taking up the entire room.
King Bed Dimensions (Width: 76 in x Length: 80 in)
If you want the most luxurious nights sleep and largest bed, then a King sized mattress maybe just what you are looking for, they measure a full 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. If you do not have a king sized bed already, you should get out a measuring tape and make sure you are comfortable with the amount of room they take up, because they can be quite big. Also the larger the bed you purchase, the more the mattress and bedding supplies, like sheets, comforters, etc will be as well, so keep that in mind.
California King Bed Dimensions (Width: 72 in x Length: 84 in)
If you are looking for even a longer king sized bed, then a California King sized mattress is likely in the cards. The California king sized mattress is a full 84 inches long and ideal for extremely tall individuals who like a lot of leg room in the bed. The size also makes it quite impressive in any bedroom.
