What Makes Up A Latex Mattress?

You maybe wondering what exactly is a latex mattress and why you may want to purchase one.  Unlike a innerspring mattress that uses springs to support you, a latex mattress is made up of natural or synthetic latex rubber.  The great thing about latex is the fact that it’s hypoallergenic and can resist odors and even mold.  For years back pain suffers have sworn by latex mattresses, since they offer great support and contour to your overall body’s shape, yet still are firm.

The Three Different Types Of Latex Mattresses

Before going off and purchasing a latex mattress, you want to at least be aware of the different types of latex mattresses, since there are some that are 100% latex and some that are a combination of latex and other materials.

1. Natural Latex Mattress:

organic-mattressNatural latex mattresses are mattresses that are entirely made up of latex, meaning they come directly from a rubber tree and then are formed into the latex mattress you sleep on.  Natural latex mattresses are going to be more expensive than the other two types of latex mattresses, since the cost of obtaining the latex rubber and manufacturing is more expensive.  However, you are getting an all natural product, that is fantastic to sleep on and safe for the environment.

2. Synthetic Latex Mattress

Synthetic latex is exactly what it sounds like, it is latex that is made from polymerization of polystyrene butadiene or styrene butadiene.  These types of latex mattresses are much more common as they are less costly to produce, yet still provide the same benefits that you would get from a natural latex mattress.

3. Blended Latex Mattress

Blended latex mattresses are a combination of natural or synthetic rubber that goes into making up the mattress.  Typically it will be 80% synthetic and 20% natural rubber.  But there are manufactures that also offer a 50/50 blend of natural and synthetic latex rubber mattresses.  The benefit of blended latex mattresses are they generally hold up better over time compared to entirely synthetic mattresses and they are more affordable than 100% all natural latex mattresses.  Though when shopping for a latex mattress you want to make sure that the blend is clearly marked so that you know what you are buying.

Types Of Latex Mattresses

Just like there are many different blends of latex mattresses that you should be aware of, there are also many different types of latex mattresses. In this section we are briefly going to cover the major types of latex mattress construction that you will commonly run across.

– 100% Latex Mattresses

One hundred percent latex mattresses are entirely made out of latex foam, they can be natural latex or a blend of latex.  Of course they will also have some type of cover or topper, but the main construction of the mattress is entirely made out of latex.  In most cases 100% latex mattresses are considered one of the best latex mattress you can purchase, especially 100% natural latex mattresses.

– Latex Over Foam

Latex over foam are some of the most common types of latex mattresses, since they provide a solid foam construction and still give you most of the qualities that a 100% latex mattress would provide.  If you are looking for a quality mattress and cannot afford a 100% latex mattress, then this would in most cases be your second best choice.

– Foam Over Latex

Last but certainly not least, there are foam over latex mattresses, where you will have a thinner memory foam layer over a latex mattress base.  The benefit of foam over latex mattresses, is they provide a little more comfort and allow your body to sink slightly into the mattress, while still providing the firmness of a traditional latex mattress. Since the vast majority of consumers who are looking for a latex mattress have some sort of back problem, we don’t recommend these types of mattresses to most individuals. While we have reviewed one foam over latex mattress, since some consumers do like the softness and comfort of a memory foam top, we typically would recommend that you purchase either a 100% latex or latex over foam mattress individually.  Then if you find out you need just a bit more comfort, you can always purchase a memory foam topper to add to your mattress.

Processing Methods

There are two main different types of manufacturing processes that go into making latex mattresses.  Dunlop and Talalay and while they are slightly similar there are some key differences throughout the manufacturing process that you should be aware of prior to purchasing a latex mattress. Dunlop is the oldest manufacturing process of the two, while Talalay is a slightly newer type of manufacturing process which ads two extra steps and thus typically Talalay mattresses are going to be more expensive.

Dunlop

The dunlop process has been around since 1929, so quite some time in bedding years.  The process begins by rubber sap being whipped into a froth in a giant centrifuge.  From there the sap is poured into a mold and heated, and molded into it’s desired form.  As the latex cures natural sediments found in the rubber sap settle to the bottom of the mold, making the latex harder on the bottom and softer toward the top of the mattress.  Compared to the Talalay process, the dunlop latex is going to be denser and generally last a bit longer.

Talalay

The talalay molding process is pretty similar, thick rubber sap is whipped into a froth in a giant centrifuge and the sap is then poured into a mold.  The difference is the next two steps of the talalay process, where the rubber mold is put into a vacuum chamber where the air is extracted from the material.  The mold then is flash-frozen using chemicals to stabilize the materials and then finally baked.  The result is a generally more soft latex mattress and a more uniform consistency throughout the entire material.

Dunlop vs Talalay Which Is Better And Does It Matter?

Now that you have a better understanding of the two types of manufacturing processes that go into making latex mattresses, you maybe wondering which one is better?  And while they can both make great latex mattresses, typically talalay latex is considered a bit better, since it produces a bit softer bed and the mattress itself is more bouncy vs the springy feeling that you get from dunlop latex.  Now if you are looking for an especially firm mattress, then you should certainly go with Dunlop, however if you are looking for a more springy mattress that conforms to your body, then Talalay is the way to go.

What About Latex Allergies

If you suffer from latex allergies, you maybe wondering if you can even sleep on a latex mattress.  The way latex allergies work is there are proteins in the latex, that when individuals are exposed to direct contact with the material they get an allergic reaction.  Since different people will have varying degree’s of allergic reactions to latex, it is important to be mindful of how your body responds to latex.  That said, people rarely suffer allergic reactions to latex mattresses, since there are mattress covers, sheets and pillowcases that act as a barrier between the latex and the individual.  That said, if you are severely allergic to latex, you should probably consider an innerspring mattress or memory foam mattress that are free of latex.  Again, most people that are allergic to latex will have no problems sleeping on latex mattresses, nor will exhibit any allergic signs, due to the number of barriers between the latex and the individual.
