How To Choose A Crib Mattress
Similar to an adult mattress, you want to choose a crib mattress that offers plenty of support and comfort, is made of high quality materials and finally one that is priced reasonably well. In our crib mattress reviews, price was always the last factor we used to decide and compare crib mattresses, due to their size there isn’t a huge difference in price, in going from a questionable or unknown mattress made of petroleum based foam made with questionable Chinese foams, to going with a USA manufactured crib mattress that you are sure that is 100% safe for your baby.
1. Support And Firmness
When selecting a mattress for a baby, you want to go with a rather firm mattress. One of the biggest hazards to babies sleeping in cribs, is the potential for SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, which can occur if your baby’s head or face is stuck face down. Choosing a firm mattress, will insure that your child has enough air circulation and is able to breath, even if for some reason they turn over in the middle of the night and are sleeping face down. While it may seem like a super soft memory foam mattress that you have on your bed that you sink into would be ideal for your child, it can potentially be deadly, so you really want to go with a firm mattress. So in the event that your child does roll over onto their stomach, they have enough breathing room and air circulation to breath properly, before they roll back over.
2. Mattress And Crib Size
The size of standard crib mattresses are regulated by the US Federal government, the minimum size is 27 1/4” x 51 5/8” and not being thicker than 6 inches. Cribs themselves are also regulated, however their interior dimensions have a plus or minus tolerance, thus you want to make sure that the mattress fits snugly in your crib. If you have a gab between the mattress and the crib, this can be a potential area of injury, if your baby’s fingers or toes should become trapped between the crib railing and mattress.
3. Do I need A Mattress Cover?
Let’s face it babies have accidents and you want to make sure that you keep your babies crib as clean an sanitary as possible. Therefore you really want to make sure you purchase a machine washable waterproof mattress cover that you can regularly clean and wipe down.
4. Should I be Worried About Warranties?
While a warranty on an adult bed is something you want to be concerned about and should factor into the overall purchase price, with a crib mattress, you really don’t have to focus that much on the length of the warranty. Keep in mind that your baby is only going to be using the crib mattress for a short while and then chances are you are going to throw it out or donate it after you are done with it, so having a 5 or 10 year warranty on a crib mattress isn’t that important.
5. Certification And Government Compliance
One of the major things you want to make sure of if you are considering a memory foam mattress, is that is is CertiPUR-US certified, which means that it is made up of safe foams that meet or exceed the US standards. We cannot stress this enough, there is NO reason to choose a cheap or inferior memory foam mattress that you don’t know what chemicals are going into the foam, in order to save a few dollars, your child’s health and well being is not worth it. Of course if you purchase an innerspring mattress, you don’t have to worry about this, but still go with trusted brands that you know are safe for your child. All of the crib mattresses we have selected are CertiPUR-US certified and safe for your baby.
Types Of Crib Mattresses
There are two different types of crib mattresses that you should be aware of when choosing a new mattress for your child. There are pro’s and con’s to each, that said they will both work, provided you get the correct size of crib mattress for your child’s crib.
Innerspring baby mattresses typically will cost a bit more than foam mattresses, simply because they are more expensive to produce. Similar to an adult innerspring mattress, a crib innerspring mattress has coils or springs in it, that provide support for your child. The firmness of an innerspring crib mattress will depend on the thickness of the steel gauge wire used and number of coils. Most crib innerspring mattresses will have somewhere between 50- 250 coils in them. The lower gauge of wire used, means the thicker the wire is and thus the firmer the mattress will be. Generally speaking you want to choose a mattress with at least 150 coils and a gauge of 15.5 or lower wire.
Foam crib mattresses are far more common, since they are more affordable to produce and still provide excellent support. This may sound strange, since the exact opposite is true in adult mattresses, however since a crib mattress is smaller and less thick than a traditional mattress, foam mattresses are actually cheaper. They are either made out of some type of polyurethane foam, unless they are made from organic foam. The main thing you want to make sure of, is that they are CertiPUR US certified or Greenguard certified, so you know they are made from materials that are safe for your child. The other benefit of foam crib mattresses are the fact they are generally lighter in weight, so they can be easily removed from your baby’s crib if you need to move it or clean it and they wipe down much more easily.

As we wrap up our top crib mattress choice for 2017, one thing is for certain there are a lot of choices to choose from and a lot of different types and technology that goes into making crib mattresses as safe as possible for our little ones. Keep in mind while these are our top picks for 2017, the decisions and preferences you may have could be different and you may find another one of our mattress’s a bit better for your child.
Which comes to choosing our top mattress pick for 2017, which is quite easy. By and far the Newton Wovenaire, crib mattress impressed us the most. Not only does it transfer heat away from your child the best, but the entire mattress cover, and foam mattress core is washable. While most of the other crib mattress’s we have reviewed do allow you to wipe down or wash the top cover, you really don’t know whether or not there could be contaminants or something growing on the inside of the mattress itself. The fact that you can wash the entire mattress and see the inside core and know 100% for sure the crib mattress is as sterile and clean as you can get it, is pretty important for us and likely for you. The only downside to the Newton crib mattress is the price, it’s one of the more expensive crib mattresses we have reviewed at just under $300. But considering that your child is going to be spending most of their time sleeping in their crib, really you cannot put a price on the ability to know for 100% sure they are sleeping on a clean mattress.
Which brings us to the next best crib mattress for 2017 that we have reviewed and that would be the Sealy Soybean Foam Core mattress. The reason the Sealy soybean foam mattress got our second top pick for 2017, is the fact that it’s made from 100% safe soybeans and it is priced exceptionally well. This particular Sealy crib mattress retails for just over $100, so it is quite a bit cheaper than the Newton mattress, yet still offers an excellent all around support and firmness that your child needs. It has an easy to wipe down and wash waterproof cover and is made by a leader in mattress and bedding.
